More than 1000 5th graders from all across New Mexico participated in this year's Mission to Mars hosted by AFRL. The event took place on Thursday, April 13 at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
The students spent the last several months prior learning about Mars. During Mission to Mars, the students took what they learned and simulated a visit to Mars. They worked in teams to build suitable habitats and life support systems and gave technical briefings about their systems to AFRL scientists and engineers.
Mission to Mars is part of AFRL’s La Luz Academy which provides STEM education to students in 5th to 12th grade around New Mexico. Mission to Mars is one of the academy’s most popular and longest-running programs. Over the past 23 years, more than 19 thousand New Mexico students have taken part in simulating life on Mars.
